Where did all these porn tubes come from?

And God said let there be porn. And there was porn, and God saw that it was good.

But God is an omniscient being, and we are just mere mortals so how do we know if the porn is any good? Well in the beginning, before the big bang (the original gangbang) you didn't know if the porn was any good until after you had downloaded it. Actually in the beginning we didn't even have websites. Just bulletin boards that you had to log in to. Of course the very first properly useful thing anyone did with a bulletin board was share porn on it. Mainly pictures but soon people started sharing video clips.

Soon some bright spark (I think it was Tim Berners Lee or someone) invented websites and obviously the most important use for a website was for displaying porn. Some actually linked to short video clips for you to watch. This was great, it must have been one of the best things to happen to mankind! It led to the first great big bang of internet porn. But trying to watch these video clips was a nightmare. You needed to install another program on your PC to watch them. Microsoft created one purely so their poor Windows users could watch porn at last. But that meant the clips had to be in the right format, a WMV file. WMV stands for Windows Media V....something. Other formats were available and different programs could play different ones.

You can see what a total mess it was. Someone had to do something.

Well Macromedia had a go with their "Flash" plugin. This could allow your browser to play Flash videos known as FLV files. Now, things started looking a little bit more like they do today. Videos could play in the browser and without waiting for the whole thing to download. Now many of those big porn sites started putting the video into the web page (called embedding) so you could start watching the video as soon as you hit the play button. No more downloading! And thus, the first porn tube sites were born!

But you still had to install Flash before you could watch anything, and anyway no-one really liked Flash. So some clever people got together and said "how do we solve this problem of watching porn over the internet?" And they came up with something I'm not going to bore you with the name of, but basically it meant that any browser, even on a smartphone, could play video without having to install anything else and without any special software.

Now that you could watch porn on your phone allowing you to have a quick wank in the toilet in your lunchbreak, the whole thing took off. Watching porn as a pastime just exploded and gave rise to the second big bang (the massive ass to mouth double penetration gangbang).

What happened next?

The rise of the big porn tubes meant that now anyone could upload their favorite porn as well as watch what others had uploaded. This meant lots of free porn for everyone! Yay!

Except, oh no! That meant nobody was making any money from producing porn any more. Why would you pay for porn when you could watch full length dirty nasty sexy adult movies for free? So nobody did.

Porn studios started going bust. Pornstars started having to work in McDonalds. Porn studs had to watch as their dicks shrivelled up due to lack of work. The world as we knew it seemed to be about to end. I mean, you can't have out of work pornstars can you? The devil makes work for idle hands as they say and so they started to go into escorting and all sorts of other mucky businesses, unlike the very clean and respectable work they had been doing before, making nasty sex movies.

How did we get out of this?

Of course, now the owners of the big porn tube websites had more money than the porn makers, so they bought them all. Those that were worth buying that is. So we went through a big switcheroo whereby the ones who had been responsible for allowing people to pirate the porn, now became the owners of that porn and started to protect it. And so, Manwin (later MindGeek), the owners of PornHub and YouPorn, bought out the studios behind Reality Kings, Brazzers, Mofos and others. The owners of XVideos bought out the studios behind Bang Bros and DDF.

The effect this had was to change the nature of the porn tube. Before, they made money by having full videos which drew millions of visitors, and then displaying adverts to those visitors. Now, they owned the rights to those full length videos so why would they let users watch them for free? No, now they want you to pay to watch the full thing, so all they will allow on the free section of the tube site is a trailer. Just like you can see trailers for the latest movie at the cinema, you can watch trailers for porn videos on the big tubes.

As soon as anyone tries to upload a full length movie without permission (which let's face it is really piracy) it will be removed and their account will be banned. This is one of the reasons why you need to have a verified account now on any of the big tubes to be able to upload stuff.

So what does this mean for me as a porn tube user?

It means you will see more and more trailers and less and less full length movies. Try it now. Go to any of the top porn tubes in our list above and try to find a full length video. You will have a real hard time finding one. Ten years ago it would have been easy.

The simple fact is, porn costs money to make. The producers, who also own the tube sites, want you to pay for it with a membership of some sort. Either to the premium version of the tube itself, or a membership to one of the premium porn sites they show the trailers for. There are still those tubes who host full porn movies but they tend to get closed down as soon as the law will allow. DaftSex.com was one this happened to recently. Go to that domain now and you end up on RedTube - because the owner, MindGeek, won the lawsuit against DaftSex.com and got it transferred to them.

What is the future of the porn tube?

I can see into the future, and I see....more 4K videos, higher quality, even more niches. Anything you want to see sexually, someone will put it up on a tube site. But, if you want to see the whole thing you'll have to pay. Hosting 4K videos doesn't come cheap. It uses a fuck ton of bandwidth. Making it costs a fortune in video equipment and processing. Everyone involved has to make their money back somehow. So the number of tube sites will be fewer, but the remaining ones will get bigger. The trailers will get better in quality, but they'll get shorter and shorter. And then eventually we'll be back to little two minute clips again! Until the next big bang that is. I can't see into the future clearly enough to know what that one will involve.
